Matt Thomann
LSCC Community Co-Director
Hey, this is Matt Thomann. I am an ICF professional coach, keynote speaker, and podcaster. My path to coaching was unexpected. After spending over a decade as a teacher, coach, and school administrator, my life took a dramatic turn in 2020 when I faced both a cancer diagnosis and an ischemic stroke while leading a school through the pandemic.
Throughout these challenges, I struggled with anxiety, both before and after the stroke, which compounded the difficulties I faced. These experiences—and the arduous journey back, which included relearning to speak and read aloud—taught me the true power of mental toughness and a positive mindset.
I came to realize that my story and experiences were part of God’s plan for me, although I initially struggled with how to move forward. Lark’s Song played a crucial role in my transformation, equipping me to help transform others. Today, I am proud to serve as a Lark’s Song Board Member, host of The Mental Mettle Podcast, and owner of Mental Mettle Coaching.
My “100% Mettle” approach is centered on helping athletes, coaches, and educators recognize their strengths and limitations when facing adversity. This approach emphasizes the importance of repeating positive, intentional actions that demonstrate growth and change. I am able to challenge and support my clients because of the adversity I have overcome and continue to face. An avid outdoorsman, lifelong learner, and practitioner of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, I embody the grit and resilience I encourage in those I work with. My clients don’t just get through adversity—they learn to thrive because of it.
